My husband is half Hawaiian and besides getting a cool new last name, I have absolutely LOVED learning about Hawaiian culture and traditions and getting great new recipes. Guava cake is a traditional Hawaiian recipe and it is one of my husband's favorite desserts. I've been wanting to make it myself for awhile so I got this recipe from my sister-in-law Mari. It's really easy to make and so yummy! I think that the fun bright pink color of the cake makes it perfect for summer parties!

I loved this cake! I am so excited to make it soon! I was curious about what was in the delicious topping and how you made the gel. Thanks for posting this!
I have had this unique cake at the Kauwe's. Love the color!
I was searching for a Guava Cake recipe after my husband teasingly suggested recreating the cake from his first birthday (when his family lived in Hawaii), and this appears to be exactly what his mom made. How fun! I'm excited to make this--and it looks not too hard to boot. Thanks!
THIS CAKE LOOKS GOOD CANT WAIT TO TRY IT OUT FOR MY MOMS B-DAY
Aloha,
I'm not half-Hawaiian but "close" enough. :)
Just got home tonight with a whole bag of fresh guavas & lemons and will turn them into a delicious Guava Creme Cake. Never used fresh fruit before and how many fresh guava smoothies can one drink? One a month. So...good...

Just one word... WOW... It was good I made it for my roommates bday cause she wanted Guava Cake and this blew the crowd away... They said it was way better then the restaurant that is about over 1 hour to get to. Thanks so much for the recipe. I was the star of the night because of it. Forget trying to us guava pulp and other stuff like that.
I did great until I got to the Guava Gel... After the sugar and juice mixture is going - I must need to let it SIT a little before I put the little bit of water/cornstarch paste mixture in. I poured the cornstarch paste into the very hot sugar/juice mixture and the cornstarch just siezed up into balls and did not mix at all :( I'm sure it's something I messed up on but I don't know what I did wrong. Maybe my "small amount" of water was WAY to much? or something like that... :( Sad face. I'm going to try to make it again in the morning - gel that is.
I want to try this. The cream cheese has to be really great with it too.
So you add the 1/2 guava juice that the cake asks for plus another 1 and 1/3 cup.....also is it 3 eggs or 6??
thanks
@Gina M- Add 1 1/3 cup guava juice in place of the 1/2 cup water the cake mix calls for. So 1 1/3 cup guava juice for the cake mix total and 3 eggs total. I hope that clears it up! :)
Yum, I am going to make this for my luau/tiki party this weekend! Thank you, I just hope it turns out and looks as delish as yours.

have you tried it with strawberry cake mix?....it tastes soo much better...
love this cake have made it before and made it again this is the second time but with my gel my cornstartch also clups up not to bad but still clumps up any tips on wat im doin wrong? for an estimate about how much water is up into the cornstartch?
A better option for the guava gel is to buy the actual guava marmalade or I personally use the guava paste that comes on a can, just cut in in little cubes and put it on a pot with half cup of water at low heat, then just keep stirring until it melts, add sugar to taste if needed, put it aside and let it cool down and its ready to use;you can find any of this products at any Latino market or at the Hispanic food section on any supermarket.
